I don't consider myself a particularly worrisome person. But perhaps that is because when most people think about worrying, they think of a person fretting over something. In fact, the
dictionary says "to torment oneself with or suffer from disturbing thoughts" and "to torment with cares, anxieties, etc.; trouble; plague" and "a worried condition or feeling; uneasiness or anxiety." These all describe the typical "worry-wort" of which I am not. But as I have been studying
Matthew 6:25-34 in BSF and Sunday School, I have thought about this topic of worry.
While I am not a worry-wort, I do believe that there are other forms of worry. These may include anything that displaces trust in God with something else. For me, it is getting things done on my own. I don't worry about them in a fretful way, I just get them done and I want them done in my time. I think this definitely falls under the umbrella of worry because while my demeanor may look like I trust God to take care of things - no matter what they may be - I want to make sure they are taken care of, so I do them (or try real hard) myself.
Another action that falls under the worry umbrella would be gossip or just babbling about everything (or particular things) in your life and other'. I think this falls under the worry category because deep down, you are talking about things because you are unhappy with the situation and want it to be different - or perhaps it stems out of jealousy - but whatever it is, it is worrying because there is no trust that God will take care of the situation or that He can provide for you what He has provided for others.
There are three recent events that come to mind when I think of my life and these forms of worry. First there was last night in BSF when we listed some of the things that we worry about which God has instructed against. One of the things that was said was clothing - and how we get dressed in the morning and then don't like what we are wearing so we (or I do at least) tear through our closet "what to wear, what to wear" and the time speeds by and you have to rush out the door. Lately I have been trying to think about what I will wear the night before as I lay in bed, or in the morning as I shower. It's been going pretty well, but this morning, I couldn't find the particular skirt I wanted to wear so I threw on another one, but I didn't like it so I continued to look for the original skirt - which I found (and wasn't particularly excited about the outfit even still) and went on my happy way to work. And this morning, that happy way took me by Starbucks! As I was in the drive-thru line, after the Starbucks lady handed me my coffee (chai tea latte to be exact - so I guess it wasn't coffee) she commented to me about my outfit. She thought it was cute and everything went so well together. I just took that as a blessing from God saying "see, I'll take care of it". Thanks God.
Cast all your cares on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7Second, our church is planning on making a lot of changes in the near and distant future. Of course "change" is not a well accepted word in life - much less the church. I am sure they are prepared for the grumblings, but they have sort of laid it out as "get on board or not, this is what we are doing". I ride on the fence of where I stand with these changes. But the real issue with every one's opinion (usually the bad opinion) is that we just don't trust God to work in this situation. We are afraid of what the future may hold, we are uncertain about what will happen to our department or offended because we get no recognition (not for our works, but just attention/affection type recognition). But what we really have to believe in our heart and soul is that God can work in this situation and He will take care of His people. We cannot grumble, gossip, or babble about what we think about the changes - we should be still and pray about every situation (with thanksgiving) and know that our God will provide.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6And last is my work. I have been working to get my company to buy some software to better facilitate my job and provide a wealth of knowledge and reporting opportunity to the customer and the company itself. Of course, I wouldn't say that I have fretted over it - but I am very anxious to get this software and get these reports up and running. It isn't going in my timing and it is very frustrating. I try so hard to move things along (which is my form of worry in this situation) but I continue to be slowed down my corporate hoops. But in the end I know this is okay, because while this is will pretty much determine the future for me as far as my job goes, I know that God has a plan for it. I need to enjoy the ride more than I do and be thankful that I have a job, instead of trying to rush through it.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matt 6:34-35 What are you worrying about? Please don't think that I never worry - even in the fretful sort of way. I am human!
